Tips on Blogger Comments.

SHOW COMMENTS

Blogger Comments are not shown on the Main Page of the blog. This is because the Main Page contains many posts and adding comments also to them would make it very long and slower to load. Hence there is a COMMENTS link below each post which when clicked on brings up the comments page in a pop up window. You can enable this in Settings--->Comments---->Show comments in a popup window?---->Yes----->Save. Otherwise the comments page will replace your blog page when the COMMENTS LINK is clicked on.

COMMENTS PAGE

The comments page cannot be customized with the same style as the rest of your blog.

ENABLE COMMENTS

To enable Blogger Comments :

1. Go to Settings----->Comments----->Comments----->Show.

2. When creating a post in the Post Editor click the 'Post Options' link in the bottom frame. The bottom frame of the editor will expand to show the Reader comment options and you can select whether to allow comments for that post.

3. Click on Layout on Dashboard and then on Edit link in the Blog Posts widget. In the popup window check the box for comments and save.

QUALITY COMMENTS

When posting a comment on other blogs offer constructive comments and try not to paste in links to your blog or you may be characterized as a spammer. Also spellcheck your comments and make sure of the grammer. The language should be polite or your comment may be rejected/deleted by the blog owner. Do not abuse third parties in your comments.

REPLYING TO COMMENTS

Always reply promptly to comments made on your blog. To reply just click on Post comments link and post your own comment. Again the language should be polite and non-abusive. Enable comment moderation in Settings---->Comments so you can reject comments by abusive persons. Do not publish abusive comments. Just ignore them and the trolls will go away!

COMMENT RESPONSE NOTIFICATION

You cam keep track of who is responding to the comments you make on other blogs using http://co.mments.com/conversations.
UPDATE : Blogger has now enabled comment response notification which sends you email as soon as someone posts a comment below yours.

DELETING COMMENTS

To delete a comment click on the Trash Can icon below it on the comments page. After deleting it once a message that the Blog Administrator has deleted this comment will be shown in place of the comment. To delete this message also click the Trash Can once more. You can also check the box 'To remove comment forever'.

CANNOT EDIT COMMENTS

Comments cannot be edited or else they would be open to manipulation. You can only accept them or reject them in totality or choose not to publish them.

CORRECTING COMMENTS

If you think you may have made the wrong comment you can delete it and make a fresh comment with an altered content. You can include links in your comments but not images.

PROFILE IMAGE ON COMMENTS

To show your profile image in your comment you should upload a profile image via your Edit Profile page Photo URL box (Click Edit Profile link on Dashboard). Also the blog you comment on should have the Display Profile image enabled in it;s Settings----->Comments.

COMMENT FEEDS

Comments can also be seen via Comment Feeds. The comment feed for your blog is :

http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/TYPE

Replace MYBLOG with actual blog name and 'TYPE' with 'Short', 'Full' or 'Default'.

Comment Feed URL for a particular post is :

http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/feeds/THISPOSTID/comments/TYPE

Replace 'THISPOSTID' with the postID number. To get the postID Number of a post load the post in browser by clicking on it's title. Then click View---->Page Source in browser menu. Search for 'postID' in the Page Source.

COMMENTS MAILING LIST

If you want blog comments to be sent to all blog members you can create a Google Group and add your members to it. Then copy and paste the email address of your Group in Settings---->Comments------>Comment Notification.

Thanks for the tips. Question - you see how on your site, it shows the post on how to, and then below, it shows the comments - how did you (and the rest of the blogging world it seems) do that? Mine is only showing comments when you click on comments. Thanks in advance for your help.

Vin said...

Daisy,

First enable all comment settings as shown in post above. Then clear cache before viewing blog.

If comments still not seen First Backup your widgets template data. Then go to Layout---->Edit Html and click the 'Revert Widget Templates to Default' link below the Template Code box.

Thanks for the comments tip. I too wanted to see all the comments on the page rather than clicking them open. But, it is what it is and I bow down to the freedom of free things!
I only have time today to see a fraction of your site. I bookmarked it for later review.
Have a great day and come see my blog! ~Nancy

Vin! I have the same issue. If I revert Widget Templates to Default, can I later go back in and customize my widgets like the contents cloud? THANKS you are a LIFESAFER. Beerz all around!

Jain Lemos said...

Never mind, it worked but I've lost my contents cloud ;-(.

Vin said...

Jain Lemos,

That is why you should backup your widget content data first before reverting them to default.

Reverting them to default loses your customization of widgets/gadgets.

Vin,
I have spent hours reading up and trying different things to enable my comment button on my blog. In the settings I selected SHOW, I went to the post are as well. I went to the HTML to add the code, but I couldn't find the the code that needed to be deleted, I added the new code anyway and it didn't work. I think I deleted my comment button all together when I first started bloging, Do you have any idea what I did and how I can put it back on? Thank you for your help.-Missy

If you could email me any help it would be very appreciated

I have the same problem with not being able to see my post. One person told me they read my blog, and they sent a comment, and that one I was able to see once I clicked on comment. Now when people click on I cannot see anything, and none of them are published. I just want them to appear when they reply. My blog works on the basis of people responding. My blogs are: kickingitwithdeetheblog-blogger.blogspot.com and "payitforward" Will you please look at my blog and see if you can give me a step by step instruction as to what it is that I need to do? I thank you in advance for your time and assistance in this matter. Also why aren't the comments going to my e-mail address? I did check it off. Thanks again.

Vin said...

Hi Vin,
I went through all the above posts. Tried all the back-ups, clearing caches, etc. Still the comments which my readers post is not visible by itself. The one line comments link has to be clicked to see the comments.
Please help.
Blog: http://pictrick.blogspot.com/

Vin said...

Pictrick!,

Comments are seen on the single post Post Page only. On the Main Page they will break the posts continuity hence only a link to the comments is shown there.

I can't get my comment box to appear on my blog so I added the comment gadget but on that I can't moderate or delete comments. I've tried looking up the problem and tried fixing the html but it's still not working. I've done everything you mentioned but it's still not working. Please help because I am a complete novice at blogging. My blog is: http://gerlabrakkee.blogspot.com/

Vin said...

Gerla Brakkee,

If you mean the comment wall gadget from Google Friend Connect then there is a setting at GFC to choose comment moderation.

For a week now, it seems WordPressers can't post a comment to my blog. Two tried, but comments never showed up.

I test-posted a comment-it worked. A regular non-WordPresser commented, it worked.

One WordPresser is a regular commenter who's had no problems before, but when she tried this past week, she said it just took her to another page! The new WordPresser said she signed into Google, became a Follower (profile image does not show jus a shadow), posted, but it didn't take. None of her comments never showed up on the blog!

Prior to this, I went from the pop-up box to the new embedded comments. After this, I switched back to the box - No go! I followed the three check-steps above, cleared my cache and still nothin' Please Help!

P.S. I looked for solutions here and at Blooger Help - nohting's worked.
