New Slideshow Widget for Bloggers. ~ Tips for Bloggers

WELCOME!

This blog contains quick tips for Bloggers. For detailed explanations do visit the main blog at :

New Slideshow Widget for Bloggers.

Blogger has introduced a new widget for Blogspot Blogs. This is the Slideshow widget to show off your Photos as a slideshow in the sidebar of your blog. Since it is a widget or Page Element it can be added only to a Layout Template.

To add it to your blog login to Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. On the Layout page click the 'Add Page Element' link and choose Slideshow Page element in the popup window. Then choose your options to add from Picasa Web albums, Flickr, Photobucket or any side supporting Media RSS.

For Flickr Username add the word which appears after the word 'Photos' in your Flickr page address :

http://www.flickr.com/photos/USERNAME/

You will see your photos appearing below. If not check your connection.

POSITIONING THE SLIDESHOW

After you place the slideshow element it will occupy the central position in the sidebar. If you want to put it to the right put this code in the CSS part of the template just above the </b:skin> tag.:

#Slideshow2_slideshow {
float:right !important;
}

Look at the unexpanded widget template to get your slideshow ID number from the widget code which will look like this :

Put the slideshow ID number in the CSS code above. To float it left use float:left.

CHANGE SLIDESHOW SIZE

To change the size of the slideshow login at Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. Then click Edit Html subtab of Template tab. Put a check in Expand widgets template checkbox at the top of the Template code box. Scroll down to this line in the slideshow widget code :

CHANGE ABOVE LINE TO :

Change '350' and '260' to the dimensions you want. Make sure that they are less than the width of your sidebar column or your template may get distorted. Preview and save template.

Enjoy!!

I hit the Picasa Web Albums as you said but that was it. How does it catch my photos I want shown.?

vin said...

AUBURN FOOTBALL STUFF,

In the popup window choose :

Source : Picasa Web Albums.

Then click the Option--->Album. Then you will get a Username box in which type your username used to login at Picasaweb :

Picasaweb for Bloggers

Then choose which album below the Username.

Hey Vin,

I got my slideshow widgets to work, but I don't like the size and alignment. How can I make the slideshow a little bigger and align it to the right?

Jenny

Vin said...

Jenny @ Chronically Uncool,

I have updated the post above. Kindly refer to it.

I have my photos in Photobucket. What do I put in the title and keyword spot so blogger can get to my account.

Vin said...

Bobby and Elicia,

It would be easier to use the Create a slideshow option in Photobucket and copy and paste the give code in a Html Page element.

Nan said...

How can I get the slideshow to pull all of my photos on Flickr, not just the most recently updated 10-20? Thanks!

Vin said...

Nan,

You will have to add a Flickr slideshow for that (get code from Flickr and paste in a Html page element).

Fiesta A La Renata said...

I followed your directions and had success getting my sliedshow to show and changing the size of it. My question now is how can I get it to include all the pictures form my flickr photo account and not just the first 20 pictures? Also, can you tell me if I can fix the way they appear somehow, some show up crystal clear and others show up very pixelated (at times hard to make out who the person is)?

im trying to get a slideshow for my blog for my photos on flickr. i tried both username as well as keyword.
the blogger says feed cannot be loaded....what am i doing wrong...the template is right as well.. or how can i get html code for flickr slideshow..

vin said...

Fiesta A La Renata,

Try adding the Flickr slideshow instead of the Blogger one to get more pictures.

Anonymous,

Check you are using correct USERNAME and add it after the word Photos like this :

http://www.flickr.com/photos/USERNAME/

The Alphin Family, UPCI Missionaries to Finland said...

Maybe I've missed this, as I am a 'brand-new' flickr user. Have added the slideshow, but need to limit what pics are shown.

Is there a no-brainer way to do this? (BTW, this feature is AWESOME)

Thanks...

Vin said...

The Alphin Family,

Try making those pictures private.

Neeraj said...

Thanks a lot dude. I was looking for the help how to display my photo from flickr. Your post helped me a lot.

Thanks again.

I am really confused about my flickr slideshow. What am I supposed to type in and where on the slideshow page element page? I have tried typing in my username on the Flickr option, and then the URL with the USERNAME on the Other option, but neither worked. What am I supposed to do?

Vin said...

Andrew,

In slideshow popup window dialog box choose Flickr from drop down menu under 'Source'

Then under 'Option' choose 'User' radio button.

Then in 'Username' text box type the name after 'photos' in your Flickr URL as explained in post above. Save.

Anonymous said...

I thought these were supposed to be user friendly (or at least HTML stupid friendly) but their not. I have been using the "username" portion of www.flickr.com/photos/USERNAME/ in the "add a slideshow" page element for Flickr and nothing appears. I did figured out that your pics in Flickr need to be public (at least thats what made mine show up). The only issue I am having now is that only one picture is showing, although all are marked as public. I am one of these HTML stupids so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Mars said...

I like the idea of this feature, although I haven't used it yet. I'm wondering how I can embed a YouTube video into a blog posting.. any tips on that?
Thanks!

Mars,

Have a look at :

elizabeth kay said...

how do i change the speed of my pictures on the slideshow?

Vin said...

Elizabeth,

I don't think there is such an option given.

hi Vin
Not having much luck with the slideshow widget either! Very frustrating. The info on your site however is clearer than any other - so thank you for that.

Donna said...

I got it on the first try. You guys rock!

Sarah said...

Hi
I am also having trouble getting my Flickr slideshow to show all my pictures, not just the 20 most recent. And I'm just not clear from previous posts as to how to fix this problem? thanks!

Vin said...

Sarah,

That is a feed problem and you just have to wait till they update the feed.

Manish Mohan said...

This was very useful. Thanks. Is it possible to get group photos on the slideshow widget? I tried using the flickr.com/groups/USERNAME as the username in the widget but it didn't work. Any ideas?

Vin said...

Manish,

What is your Flickr Group URL/address?

countrysidegardener said...

I used photobucket to make a slide show. In the layout editor on Blogger I used the name of the slideshow in the keyword section but it does not load the slideshow. I used the HTML code from photobucket to post the slideshow as a page element but the pictures are larger than the side bar. Any help? Thanks in advance

Hi Vin

The flickr group url is http://www.flickr.com/groups/669186@N21/. I tried entering 669186@N21 as the user in my slideshow widget.

Vin said...

Manish Mohan,

Since all pictures are by 'manishmo' try entering that on the slideshow widget User Name.

You can also try the Flickr slideshow widget instead of the Blogger one for the Group album.

Photobucket

Hi Vin, I was trying to load a slideshow using Photobucket, but have not had much success. I do get a slideshow running, but it is others pictures. When I try to login as it asks in Photobucket, it says it does not recognize me. Help, please!

Vin said...

Cadria,

Did you use the Blogger slideshow widget OR did you create the slideshow at Photobucket.com and use the code from there?

cadria said...

I tried to load a slideshow by using Add a Page Element>Slideshow. When I click on Photobucket as a source, it asks me for a keyword. I typed in the album name, but that didn't work. A slideshow did appear, but I think it used the name of my album as a keyword (which actually makes sense).

Oh wait, I just went into Photobucket and "shared" the album and it actually worked! :) However, it is now way too big. *sigh* Can you help me with that? Sorry to be such a pain.

Vin said...

Cadria,

Add this code :

SLIDESHOW CODE

around your slideshow code. Use Preview to adjust number '150'.

Cindi Albright said...

Hi Vin-
I used your helpful hints yesterday to complete the insertion of my flickr slideshow to my blog page...however, when it came to the alignment (because it's centered just like you said it would be) I understood the first tip about the placement of code, but the second one...about the slideshow number...I could not figure that one out. Please help?
Cindi

Vin said...

Cindi,

In your template code box scroll down to the code for the slideshow widget. It will look like this :

<b:widget id='Slideshow1' locked='false' title='Slideshow' type='Slideshow'/>

For the above code use :

#Slideshow1 {
float:right !important;
}

if you want to put it on the right.

Cindi said...

Okay....color me stupid, but the light did not come on yet! I found the
slideshow widget...so I'm supposed to do what? replace the widget with the
other code? Please...I know you are trying to make this very elementary for
people like me....think pre-school! Do I place the #Slideshow1 { and the
rest of it, within the widget? And then, because I want it to go left....I replace right with left?

Vin said...

Cindi,

Paste this code :

#Slideshow1 {
float:right !important;
}

in the CSS part of the template between <b:skin> and </b:skin> tags.

neoyoli said...

i also tried to add a slideshow, in the way you described (my username from http://www.flickr.com/photos/USERNAME/), but on my blog appears only a blank box.
any ideas?

Vin said...

Neoyoli,

What user name did you use?

Did you check the User option instead of the Keyword option? Also choose 'Flickr' at the top.

I am frustrated with the slidehsow widget, or maybe it's Flickr that is frustrating me! I have read all these comments and am so impressed with the information here! But still, my problem persists. I am another newby, unclear on html and widgets. I am trying to use the slideshow widget to get certain particular photos from my Flickr acct. It just keeps showing all of my photos. How to I pick and choose?!? What if I want one slideshow of flowers, and another of cars, you know. Please help!
I suceeded in using photobucket, for this, but the images are too large.

Vin said...

Roxlou!,

Try creating another Flickr account.

RoxylouEOG said...

Vin,
Thanks for the idea! I bet that will work if they let me have multiple accts. It makes sense, then I can have different accoutns for different subject matter, maybe.
By the way, you rock. I have learned so much from this website, how to change the size of my slideshows, how to correctly create a slideshow, even how to do slideshows from different hosts. I am looking forwad to learning more of this HTML stuff, and having even more creative controll! Thanks for your wisdom!!!! How do you have the patience for this!

It is the feed link for your album.

Hi Vin,

I am still a tad confused on trying to add a slide show. I've made the slide show in photobucket, so how EXACTLY do I add it to my blog? I have tried adding new page element & choosing "add slideshow", then what do I choose? I have been trying both photobucket & other.

Any help for this dummy would be greatly appreciated! :)

Cheers

Vin said...

Linda,

Create the slideshow in Photobucket and you will be given the code. Paste that code in Edit Html tab of Post Editor OR in a Html Page Element.

Linda said...

Hi again Vin,
I have tried doing what you say, but it keeps telling me that the feed could not load. I have tried it dozens of times...same problem though.

1. should I be choosing photobucket as the source?

2. if so, where do I put the copied HTML code?

Thanks for all your help

Cheers

Vin said...

Linda,

Photobucket.com has the 'Create a Slideshow' menu. I said to create slideshow there and then copy the code they give and paste it in Edit Html tab of Post Editor or in a Html Page element.

Linda said...

I guess I just don't understand.

I did create the slideshow in photobucket...I did copy the code it gave ...and tried to add the slideshow in my blog by going to "add new page element", "add slideshow"...but no matter which "source" I tried, it keeps saying THE FEED COULD NOT BE LOADED. and it doesn't work.

I guess it's all too difficult and maybe I should just give up.

thanks for ur help

Vin said...

Linda,

After copying code from Photobucket go to 'Add New Page Element" and choose 'Html Page element' in pop up window. (NOT slideshow element).

Paste the code in a Html/Javascript page element!

Linda said...

Thanks again Vin

Yes, that seems to work by adding it in HTML/javascript page element....except that the slideshow is too big, and is only showing about 1/4 of the side of it.

I am new to blogging, and not sure if that's the reason that this all seems like too much for me. At the moment, I really feel like giving up on the whole thing....which is so unlike me :(

Thanks again for your help

Cheers

Vin said...

Linda,

If you want it in your blog post paste the code in Edit Html tab of Post Editor.

If you want to leave it in sidebar you can try to increase width of blog.

Also see if there is a number for width in the code and decrease it to fit the width of your sidebar.

I find Blogger will not allow me to add news Picassa albums when I want to add a slideshow.

If I choose "Picassa" album, add my Picassa name, it will not allow me to add the name of an existing albumn--it only shows what's already been uploaded. Choosing "other" and adding the url or embedding the url or html doesn't work. How can I add multiple Picassa albumns when the program won't let me?

All the pictures in a blog are collected together in an album at Picasawebalbums for Bloggers.

Login to your account there and click Embed Slideshow in sidebar after clicking on your album. Copy and paste the code given in the popup window in Edit Html tab of your Post Editor.

O.k. I've been reading all these post hoping to find my golden nugget to fix my problem but I haven't yet. My problem is I used flickr and made a slideshow, I can watch my slideshow on flickr and it looks great. I then saved it and proceeded to move it to my blog. When I went to edit my slideshow page element I chose flickr, picked user, put the user name in which is 26512959@N05 saw my slide start but.... 85% of my show doesn't appear and... it's not in order. Son of a! I am very frustrated! Maybe they are all not public and if so how do I make them public? Because if the ones that are public, became public by accident. Had no idea they had to be. HELP! pretty please..

Create a slideshow in Picasa using their link in album page sidebar.

Then paste the code given in a Html page element or Edit Html tab of post editor.

For anyone who'd like to feed only a select set of photos from Flickr to their blog, I've just (after a few hours today...) found it to be a simple extension of earlier advice here re: posting whole streams --

Whereas to post your whole Flickr stream, you'd enter everything after "photos/" in the feed address, to feed only a certain set you'd enter everything after "http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/" in the set's feed address -- here "feeds/" is the juncture just like "photos/". Confusing for a rube like me; hope this helps someone else. Miller-time now.

Rebecca and Molly the Border Collie said...

I'm wondering if you can help me figure out where to file enhancement requests for the slideshow. I'm used to bugzilla links all over but blogger doesn't have those.

Anyway, you say the limited number of pictures from flickr is related to the feed needing to be updated. Any idea when this can be expected?

To get around the issue of picking limited pics out of my collection, I just assigned a unique tag no one else was using instead of working from my user name, but it would be great if there was somewhere I could ask the people who make this code to consider enhancing a future version with the function to allow dual selection of keyword _and_ user so you can really trust that you'll only get your pics with the right tag.

But thanks for the great tips in your blog. It at least let me know that I wasn't doing anything wrong when the slideshow wasn't doing what I wanted.

Jennifer,

Look for the id of the sldieshow widget in the unexpanded template code and then add this code in CSS part of template :

#SlideShow1 {
text-align: center;
}

where '1' is the id number. Preview and save.

Jennifer said...

Thanks so much for your help, you rock. It's still not centered but I think it has to do with the photos I'm using, because on another slideshow I have with wider pics, it looks more centered.

I tried adding the html here, but it says it cannot be accepted. My blog is The life and Times of Manzi. You'll see what I am talking about when you click on the blog.

About changing the size: I changed the two 320's to 160 and the 240 to 120. It didn't work before I changed them and now I changed it back and it still doesn't work. The code did work when it was a post, just not when I made it as an html gadget.

Please bear with me if I'm asking a repeat question .... just upgaded from Classic template, and I already have the flickr html code to insert a slideshow/badge into my template (as opposed to using the sidebar feature.) Can you tell me exactly WHERE in the template I am supposed to insert the code? In my classic template, I had it inserted under my header, and above my posts, stretched out across the middle. Now, no matter where I put it in the template, the photos show up above my header, and ALL the code is listed as well.
Any suggestions??? Thanks so much (this worked flawlessly in my classic template and I'm already considering going back to that .... but I'd love to utilize some of the features of the upgraded version as well, so I'm really hoping I can figure this out!) :)

Kristie,

DO NOT PASTE DIRECTLY IN TEMPLATE.

Go to Layout---->Page Elements--->Click Add Gadget link---->In popup window scroll down and click Html gadget----->Paste the code under Contents and Save.

Vin, thanks for the instruction on how to enter as a gadget .... I don't mean to appear dense, but where is the "paste" button for the content box? I've got it "copied" ... but can't see where to "paste" on that screen, and no way could I re-type the entire page of html code without messing it up!! :)

Kristie,

You can do either of the following :

1. Right click inside the contents and choose 'Paste' from drop down menu.

2. Left click once inside the contents window and do a Ctrl+V on keyboard.

Either of above only after copying the flickr code.

I set up a Picasa Web Album... When I attempt to configure the slideshow on blogger, I get: "feed could not be loaded."

Matt Dowdell,

Click on your album at Picasaweb.
Then click 'Link to this album' link in sidebar.
In expanded box click 'Embed Slideshow' link.
In popup window get the code to copy.
Paste it in a Html gadget or in Edit Html tab of Post Editor.

This is great, thanks for the info! I am wondering why the slideshow cannot be put into the header area? I am hoping to find one I can put there...any suggestions where I can find one? There are free templates one can download for WordPress to place in the header area, very nice but I cannot find one for Blogger. I don't want to make the switch but will if I can't find a solution.
Thanks in Advance!

Charlie,

Just a minor edit of the Template Code will enable you to add ANY gadget to header.

See the first part of my post on How to add picture to header?

Vin,

Mark and Chris asked above if you can have a slide show of just the pictures on your blog- I know about Picasa Web Albums, but not all the photos on my Picasa are on my blog. Some are in various albums. I think the question is, is there a way to have a scrollable slide show or photo browser of just the photos that are within posts on your blog? Something that can show only the photos on your posts? Thanks.

DirtDigger (Tessa),

All photos in your blog are in one album in Picasawebalbum. You can make a Custom Slideshow of all pictures in that album.
