Share This, Add This Social Bookmarks for Blogs.

Social Bookmarks is a method of sharing over the Internet bookmarks of interesting web pages that you have visited. When visitors visit your blog you should also provide them with an easy method to bookmark your posts.

There are many social bookmarking sites now and if you add all their icons at the bottom of each post it will slow down the loading of your web page. Hence it is better to add a single bookmark which gives the reader access to the major bookmarking sites with a single click.

SHARE THIS BOOKMARK

To get this go to the Share This site and register (free). You can customize the bookmark to include the sites you want and in the color to match your blog design. Then copy the code generated.

Login at Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. Then click on Edit Html subtab of Template tab. First backup your template. Put a check in Expand widgets template checkbox at the top of the template code box. Scroll down to this line in the blog posts widget :

<p class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'/>

Paste the Share This code immediately below the above line. Change all "&" characters in the code to "& a m p ;" without the spaces and the quotes. Save Template. Clear Cache and View Blog. It will look like this :

ADD THIS BOOKMARK

To get the code for this go to the Add This site and register (free). Then on the select button page choose your blogging platform as Blogger and click on Get your free button. On the next page select the code under "New Blog post button - New Drop Down" and copy it.

Login at Blogger.com and click on Layout link on Dashboard. Then click on Edit Html subtab of Template tab. First backup your template. Put a check in Expand widgets template checkbox at the top of the template code box. Scroll down to this line in the blog posts widget :

<p class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'/>

Paste the Add This code immediately below the above line. Save Template. Clear Cache and View Blog. It will look like this :

You have to hover your mouse cursor over the bookmark to see the drop down. Have a look at the one below this post.

Julie70,

Put 'joyoflife' as Username instead of 'Julie70'.

I'm facing problems with adding social bookmarking buttons on the footer on every post but it's not working, what's the reason?

Vin said...

Web Kohli,

What is your blog address so we can check it out?

Ack, when trying to add it to Idiots.blogspot.com I get "XML error message: The reference to entity "publisher" must end with the ';' delimiter." when I try to save my edited template HTML.

...can you tell me where I'm going wrong?

Thanks!

Alan,

Change all "&" characters in the code to "& a m p ;" without the spaces and the quotes.

This was great help, but now the "share this" icon shows up several times across the bottom of every post. Actually, since my blog is fairly new, it looks like the ShareThis link is on my first post once, my second post twice, three times on the third, etc.

Can you tell me where I've gone wrong?
My blog address is http://lovenstamps.blogspot.com

Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Can you send me your blog template?

I have the same problem that Meg is having. Three SharThis buttons appear at the bottom of post pages and six at the end of each post "preview" on the main page.

Whatever you found in Meg's, would it be possible to post what the fix was for her?

Vin:
I just added ShareThis to my blogger blog. I set it up to display with each post (rather than in the sidebar) and one problem I am having involves posts whose title contains a single quote.

The ShareThis icon does not display for these posts and I know why this is.

Here's the code I added to my template:

< script language='javascript' type='text/javascript' >
SHARETHIS.addEntry({
title: '< data:post.title/ >',
url: '< data:post.url/ >',
icon: 'http://path.to/icon'
}, {button:true} );
< /script >

(Spaces added after "<" and before ">" in order to display the code here.)

As you can see, I am passing the blogger data tag called "data:post.title" to the ShareThis JavaScript. So, whenever the post title contains a single quote, the script apparently fails, and the "{button:true}" parameter is not executed (and this is why the ShareThis icon does not appear for that particular post).

I understand that JavaScript has a built-in "escape" function (allowing me to translate single quotes in my post title, and thereby solving this problem), but I do not know how I would implement this in my blogger template.

Over at the ShareThis forum there is an example of the JavaScript "escape" function given by a member, but I am assuming this applies to a WordPress blog, not Blogger.

Can you help me?

(I figured, too, if you can, then you might like to add your solution to the ShareThis forum and possibly draw more readers to your blog).

Thanks!
