Add Blog Sitemap to Google Webmaster. ~ Tips for Bloggers

WELCOME!

This blog contains quick tips for Bloggers. For detailed explanations do visit the main blog at :

Add Blog Sitemap to Google Webmaster.

As shown in Blogger, Feedburner, Sitemaps and Submitting All Your Posts Blogger Feeds Google « phydeaux3 Blogger blogs generally do not need to add their sitemap to Google Webmasters as they are usually well crawled. Also a sitemap is included in the default robots.txt file in the blog root :

http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/robots.txt

Load the above URL in browser after putting in your blog name instead of MYBLOG and you will see :

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /search

Sitemap: http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated

The sitemap is shown in the last line.

Adding your sitemap as the feed from your blog faces another difficulty when your feed has been redirected. In this case login to Google Webmasters Dashboard and click on link under Sitemap. First you will have to add your site to Google Webmasters. In that case paste your blog URL in the Add site box and click the Add site button.

When adding sitemap choose the General web sitemap option and in the box paste this code :

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

If your blog has more than 100 posts click Add a Sitemap link once more and paste this code :

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

If your blog has more than 200 posts repeat above to add athird sitemap and paste this code :

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=201&max-results=100

Save your sitemaps and visit the site again after some time to check that they have been verified as shown in picture below :

THE PREFERRED DOMAIN PROBLEM

Another problem may arise in adding a sitemap if you have chosen a preferred domain name for your site in Google webmasters Sitemaps Tools. For example you may have chosen :

http://www.MYBLOG.blogspot.com

instead of :

http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com

In such cases you will have to add the preferred domain as a new site to Google Webmasters Dashboard using the Add a Site box and then add a sitemap to the preferred domain.

Pretty new to blogging and your site has been a real help. I already subscribed. As to this post though... how do I enter a sitemap if I chose to host my blogger account on my own domain? Would it work the same except substitute my domain in http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/robots.txt ???
thanks for you tips!

Alex,

After redirecting your blog that link will also be redirected.

Great post, thanks! I was wondering how to upload a sitemap, and had assumed I couldn't do it with blogspot since you can't actually upload your own files. I just now added my sitemap using the instructions in your post; hopefully Google will read it properly in a little while.

hi Vin,

I added my posts to google using the atom feeds and just started receiving searches. However, they're all going to the main page instead of the individual post - only a few searches went to the individual posts. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Cheapdanny,

Check in Google Webmaster Tools how many pages have been indexed. Optimize blog for Search Engines.

Hi,

I have directed my blog from tarunreflex.blogspot.com to www.tarunreflex.co.cc
Will the sitemap for this new URL be found at the same http://MYBLOG.blogspot.com/robots.txt?
One more thing,Is there anyway that i can configure my blog to ping Google as soon as it is updated automatically?

Vin said...

Tarun.reflex,

Your sitemap is now at :

http://www.tarunreflex.co.cc/robots.txt

To ping google automatically in Settings---->Basic enable 'Let search engines find my blog' and save.

My blog on blogger has over 200 posts and when i install it in my template for the sitemap i keep getting an error message, and have tried doing it several other ways but keep getting errors, maybe you would have the exact code to put in place. Thanks!
Message Error: Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The reference to entity "start-index" must end with the ';' delimiter.

Vin said...

Daryl Saari ,

This error message is received when you are trying to load a Classic template. Are you trying to do that?

Hm. Thank you but this does not work for me.
I have included normal sitemap and one according to your directions, but google webmaster says there are 33 pages restricted by robots and 4 not found. Here is my blog. Any advice would be appreciated.

Vin said...

Thomas,

All blogspot blogs have the label pages restricted by robots.txt file (which cannot be removed) since they are considered as duplicate content. That is normal.
